MIRROR OF PERFORMANCE

  • June 23, 2023

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25 (NKJV)

We’ve been on a series over the past couple days talking about the different “mirrors” that we use in looking at ourselves. The problem is we think that we can determine who we are by looking into these mirrors, but they lie to us.

The third false mirror to be aware of is the mirror of performance. It’s common to rely on performance for a sense of self. We tend to define ourselves by our careers, our roles in the family and by our accomplishments, but this mirror falls short of defining who we truly are.

The truth is you are not defined by what you do. You are a new creation in Christ.

When you gave your life to Christ you became a new creation, and this new creation you’ve become is very special. You have the nature of God. You’re His child. And you now have the power to overcome struggles and bad habits in a highly effective and completely new way.

James 1:22 puts it this way: As you look intently into the perfect law that brings freedom (as you meditate on God’s Word and keep listening to great teaching), it’s as if you’re looking into the perfect mirror. You begin to discover that you are not defined by what you’ve done or have failed to do. You are a King’s kid!

This is the mirror you need to look into—the one that reflects back royalty in Christ. And as you begin to act more like the King’s kid you are, you will be blessed in all you do.
